Asian Pacific American (AAPI) Heritage Month Resources
Since 1992, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month has been observed every May to honor the contributions and cultures of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout U.S. history. The origins of this commemorative month trace back to 1977 when Congress introduced resolutions to establish Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution proclaiming the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. This observance was later expanded to a month-long celebration in 1990, and in 1992, Congress passed Public Law 102-450, officially designating May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
May was chosen to commemorate two significant milestones: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was built largely by Chinese immigrant labor.
AAPI Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich cultural heritage, resilience, and remarkable accomplishments of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
