PSYR 8230 - Psychotherapeutic Interventions: Behavioral and Gestalt (5 credits)

(5 credits)

This course presents two major psychotherapeutic approaches in contemporary clinical practice: behavior therapy and Gestalt therapy. Students explore core principles and evidence-based applications of behavioral interventions, including classical and operant conditioning, exposure therapy, behavioral activation, rehearsal/modeling, and token economy. The course also addresses classical and contemporary Gestalt concepts, theory, and techniques including contact and boundary dynamics, emotional and somatic experiences, experiential methods, and the therapeutic relationship. Contemporary integrative approaches such as process-experiential therapy and emotionally-focused therapy are also discussed. Clinical application and skills practice span diverse populations and presenting concerns, with an emphasis on ethical practice and multicultural sensitivity. This course has an in-person learning component, which means that students will divide their time between online coursework, virtual synchronous classes, and learning and skills practice in-person. This integrated approach facilitates the connection between online didactic learning and clinical skills practice and demonstration.
