RESC 8401 PhD Clinical Psychology Residency 1 (0 credit)

The purpose of Residency 1 is to socialize beginning doctoral students into the Walden doctoral community of scholar practitioners. Topics include building identity as a scholar, research literacy and ethics in doctoral research, an introduction to Walden library, searching for scholarly research, developing doctoral reasoning and logic, scholarly writing and plagiarism prevention, and an introduction to APA style. For the required final assignment, there are two parts. For each seminar, students write a reflection, including key takeaways, list resources and skills learned, and answer two prompts per seminar related to the seminar objectives. For the second part of the final assignment, students create an Action Plan. Based on something learned in Residency 1, students choose one skill or area where they want to grow and write a SMART goal as their action plan.

RESC 8402 PhD Clinical Psychology Residency 2 (0 credit)

The purpose of Residency 2 is to continue building your capacity to perform doctoral research, assess research feasibility, and to develop initial ideas for dissertation studies. Topics include distinguishing between social problems and research problems, building the literature review, connecting research problems to research question and methods, examining theoretical frameworks, and aligning your research components. For the required final assignment, you will complete the “Aligning Research Components Matrix” with initial ideas for key components of a research problem and research design.

RESC 8403 PhD Clinical Psychology Residency 3 (0 credit)

The purpose of Residency 3 is to continue developing research skills that will lead to the development of the prospectus or dissertation proposal. Topics include qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research designs; data collection, management, and analysis considerations; and development of the prospectus. Upon completion, students will have completed a research alignment tool to inform and guide their dissertation research planning.

RESC 8404 PhD Clinical Psychology Residency 4 General (0 credit)

0 credits

The purpose of Residency 4 is to build student capacity to complete the dissertation proposal and the final dissertation. Topics include dissertation chapter expectations, the Walden dissertation process, and working with the dissertation committee. Students will present a PowerPoint of their proposed dissertation research and receive developmental feedback from faculty and peers. Feedback will emphasize alignment, quality, and feasibility. For the required final assignment, you will compose a reflection identifying what you have learned about your own research and the research development process in general as well as specifying next steps to move forward with a timeline for completion.
