Effective teachers today are committed not only to understanding the historical foundations of education but also to analyzing and questioning how laws, policies, practices, beliefs, and assumptions may have created inequitable opportunities, experiences, and outcomes for learners. These efforts, along with a professional pledge to abide by ethical codes and laws related to student rights and teacher responsibilities, provide a strong foundation for teachers to become effective advocates and role models within their communities. In their collaborative work with families, effective teachers engage in culturally affirming, reciprocal communication to support every student’s healthy development and learning. Effective teachers also possess a strong understanding of each student’s unique strengths and needs, including how factors like abilities, trauma, mental health issues, and the effects of substance use influence healthy development and learning. Supporting students and their families holistically is what makes the teaching profession both challenging and deeply rewarding.
