In classrooms where every student thrives, teachers understand the importance of relationship-based, culturally affirming, and proactive approaches to behavior. They communicate verbally and nonverbally in ways that demonstrate respect for and responsiveness to the cultural backgrounds and differing perspectives learners bring to the learning environment. And they engage students in motivating learning experiences that include critical and creative thinking, problem framing and problem solving, invention, memorization, and recall, integrating real-world learning opportunities into instruction. Building on this foundation, teacher candidates in this course study student engagement, behavior management and culturally responsive teaching.
