(5 credits)

Elementary teachers have an invaluable opportunity to teach the vital skills of science inquiry and the
scientific method. They can help students become facile in communicating and defending scientific arguments. Elementary teachers inspire students’ curiosity by exploring science as a basic and fascinating human endeavor from the beginning of time. These competencies, which promote critical and creative thinking, support not only science learning but success in all areas of school and life. This course not only includes these integral components of the study of science but also builds understanding of how to teach the fundamental concepts and principles of physical, life, and earth and space science. Covering scientific tools and equipment, how science relates to other fields, and ways to ensure safety in environments that are alive with science learning, teacher candidates are involved in both science theory and evidence-based practice for implementing engaging science investigations.

Note: This course requires a 25-hour field experience at a school approved by Walden University.
