The breadth and depth of the teaching profession can be overwhelming. However, if looked at through the lens of: What can I do to help my students thrive and learn, the commitment becomes not only manageable but inspirational. In this course, students explore key theories related to how children learn in relation to physical, social, emotional, moral, and cognitive development. With this foundation in mind, students move to studying child mental health and why social emotional learning is a lynchpin not only of healthy social emotional development but a potential positive influence on engagement in learning, well-being, self-efficacy, and resilience. Grounded in the premise that students need to feel a sense of belonging and family connectedness, the course approaches inclusion as it pertains to every student as well as the processes and procedures of special education so that healthy child development and meaningful learning can thrive as critical components of every elementary school classroom.
