How to Renew or Upgrade Credentials
Renewal: Renewal of a Professional Educator Certificate is called “continuation” and requires an application form and fee. The current process expires July 1, 2023, when new requirements will be posted on the ALSDE website.
Upgrade: Upgrading an existing certificate requires graduate study in the same field as the current certificate. ALSDE defines some generalized areas of study (ie, Curriculum, Assessment, & Instruction) as outside of the field of certification. Teachers should verify with ALSDE that an area of study is considered to be in the same field before enrollment.
Special note: At this time, ALSDE will recognize out-of-state graduate level programs for salary increases, but NOT for certificate upgrades from Type B to Type A.
