State Requirements for Teacher Licensure Renewal: Kentucky

How to Renew or Upgrade Credentials

Renewal: Educators are required to have taught for three years within the past five-year period of the certificate or complete 6 semester hours of graduate level credit for Renewal of teacher certification. Additional information can be found in the KY Educator Credentialling System (KECS) online.

Special note: At this time, Walden K-12 education related programs are not authorized in Kentucky except for the MS in Higher Education, the EdD - Higher Education Leadership and Management, and the EdD - Higher Education (Self-Designed) programs.

Upgrade: Educator licensure in KY uses a rank system. Rank III requires a bachelor's degree and regular teacher certificate. Rank II requires a master’s degree in a subject field approved by the KY EPSB. Rank I requires a master’s degree in a subject field approved by the KY EPSB plus 30 semester credits of approved graduate level coursework or equivalent continuing education. Rank I can also be accomplished by earning National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification.
