Teacher Licensure Renewal

State Requirements for Teacher Licensure Renewal: Massachusetts

How to Renew or Upgrade Credentials

Renewal: Educators are required to earn 150 Professional Development Points (PDPs) with specific requirements defined by the licensure field. 30 points are to be provided by the school district. 90 points are typically elective. PDPs not provided by the school district can be provided by other entities including college credit with confirmation by MA DESE that it meets the requirements of being within the licensure field. Educators can access more information by logging into the Educator Licensure and renewal (ELAR) online system.

Upgrade: Educators can upgrade to a Professional License after being employed for 3 years, completing an induction and mentoring program, and completing one of three options – a state approved professional licensure program, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification, or a master’s degree or higher in the licensure field. Educators may be eligible for salary increases for coursework and graduate degrees earned within their certification field. Educators should contact their specific school districts for details about salary schedules and requirements.
