Teacher Licensure Renewal

State Requirements for Teacher Licensure Renewal: Wisconsin

How to Renew or Upgrade Credentials

Renewal: Educators are required to have a Professional Development Plan (PDP) in conjunction with the performance evaluation process. This plan serves as the expectation for professional learning needed for licensure renewal. Educators who hold a Lifetime Educator License must also complete a new background check every 5 years and apply to maintain the license. Educators must continue to be employed in the licensure field to maintain the license but can reapply for a provisional license after a lapse of employment.

Upgrade: Educators may apply for an upgrade to a Lifetime Educator License, Tier III, after six successful semesters of teaching experience. Educators may qualify for a Master Educator License, Tier IV, by completing the National Board certification process or the Wisconsin Master Educator Assessment Process (WMEAP). Educators may be eligible for salary increases for graduate degrees earned within their licensure field. Educators should contact their specific school districts for details about salary schedules and requirements.
