Teacher Licensure Renewal

State Requirements for Teacher Licensure Renewal: Pennsylvania

How to Renew or Upgrade Credentials

Renewal: Educators must earn a Level II certificate by the end of 6 years of service. Level II certification requires 24 credits earned after the initial bachelor's degree. At least 6 credits must be in the certification content area. CEUs are not accepted to meet the Level II requirements. After earning Level II certification, educators are required to earn 6 semester credits or CPE credits of PDE-approved professional education, or they can earn 180 hours of continuing professional education from a PDE-approved provider every 5 years. They can also use a combination of credits and hours. The PA regulation is called Act 48.

Upgrade: Educators may be eligible for salary increases for graduate degrees earned within their licensure field. Educators should contact their specific school districts for details about salary schedules and requirements.
