How to Renew or Upgrade Credentials

Renewal: Educators are required to complete 6 semester credit hours or 150 State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) or District Provided Professional Development (DPPD) appropriate to the content and grade level of the existing certificate to renew a Standard Teaching Certificate, a Professional Teaching Certificate, or an Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate. Educators may use a combination of semester credit hours, SCECHs, and DPPDs.

Upgrade: Educators may opt to upgrade a Standard Teaching Certificate to a Professional Teaching Certificate through successful teaching experience and specific coursework (determined by the certification area and level). Educator may opt to upgrade a Professional Teaching Certificate to an Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate through National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification or an approved Michigan Teacher Leader program together with successful teaching experience.
