Graduate Certificate in Special Education (Quarter)

For students beginning their program August 26, 2024 or later

The Graduate Certificate in Special Education prepares educators to develop effective literacy and behavioral interventions, differentiate instruction, and collaborate successfully to support diverse special needs students. Course topics include: research-based approaches to monitoring progress and designing and delivering standards-based instruction in the content areas; methods for identifying reading and writing disabilities and devising appropriate interventions; and advanced behavior assessment, management, and intervention practices. Courses emphasize the importance of professional collaboration in serving special needs students.

This program does not lead to an endorsement, certification, or licensure. Walden makes no representation, warranty, guarantee, or commitment that successful completion of this program or coursework for graduate credit within this program will permit a graduate to obtain state certification or licensure.

The graduate degree program and coursework within the program in which you are enrolling may be accepted by many states toward upgrading or renewing a license or obtaining a salary increase (depending on state or district policy). Teachers are advised to contact their individual school districts as to whether this program may qualify for salary advancement.   • Apply current legal and ethical policies and culturally responsive practices to support high quality educational experiences for All students with exceptionalities.
  • Apply data-informed decision making strategies and evidence-based practices—including assistive technology-- to design, adapt, implement and assess learning experiences for All students with exceptionalities.
  • Apply evidenced-based, evaluation and assessment practices to monitor student achievement, guide data-informed instructional planning and transition services, and promote continuous improvement for All students with exceptionalities.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills necessary to collaborate with multiple stakeholders to improve instructional programs (e.g., core subjects, literacy, behavioral, social) for All students at the school and systems levels.
